It’s such an exciting time when you bring home a new corgi puppy. The first few weeks that you and your new puppy spend together will be full of love and new challenges, and one of them is potty training.

A lot of new dog parents will use puppy pads for corgis to help toilet train their new dog.

One of the biggest benefits of puppy pads for corgis is that you can place them anywhere. Which means that even if you don’t have access to a backyard, you can still potty train your new dog and limit indoor accidents.

It will take time and patience to toilet train your corgi, but they’re a smart breed and they’re only a puppy for a short period of time.

In this article, I’ll share with you everything there is to know about puppy pads for corgis:

  • Can corgis use pee pads?
  • Will a corgi use a puppy pad?
  • How long can a corgi hold their pee?
  • At what age should a corgi be potty trained?
  • How do you train a corgi to use a pee pad?
  • Are corgi puppies easy to potty train?
  • How to potty train a corgi puppy

Can corgis use pee pads?

Yes, corgis can use pee pads. But you might need to teach your corgi how to use it first. If your corgi will use a puppy pad depends on both your training and their individual character.

Some corgis will start using a pee pad quickly, whereas others might need a little longer to get use to them.

How long can a corgi hold their pee?

How long a corgi can hold their pee depends on their age, medical background, and how many liquids they have in their belly!

As a rule of thumb, puppies will need to pee a lot more frequently than adult dogs.

In fact, when you bring a new puppy home, you’ll need to take them out for potty every few hours.

However everyone’s circumstances are different, and for some people this might be harder to attain to than others.

But if you’re planning on bringing a new puppy home, it’s best to do it during a time where there’s always someone at home.

Your home is a completely new environment for your corgi puppy, and this can be scary at first.

To reduce the risk of your corgi puppy developing separation anxiety, it’s best to prioritise their comfort and confidence before leaving them home alone.

Once you have an adult dog, they typically have no problems holding their pee for up to 10-12 hours. But it really depends on the individual dog, and ideally you want to give them access to toilet breaks as required.

At what age should a corgi be potty trained?

You can start potty training on the first day of bringing your new corgi puppy home.

In fact, it will be easier to teach your corgi puppy a new behaviour, rather than un-teaching a dog a behaviour that they learned in the past.

How do you train a corgi to use a pee pad?

You can train a corgi to use a pee pad by placing them onto the pad every other hour (when it’s potty time) and saying your pee command (such as “go potty”). When your corgi puppy relieves itself on the pee pad, you want to praise heavily and give your puppy treats.

Doing this turns it into a positive experience for your puppy, which they will want to repeat.

Corgis are smart dogs, so if you can do this a few times, you’ll soon have a corgi who will be able to both use a pee pad as well as to pee on command (if they need to pee).

If your corgi starts to wander off with the intention of peeing somewhere else, you can quickly (but gently) grab them and place them on the pee pad to redirect the behaviour. Then praise and reward.

At no times should you punish a corgi puppy for peeing in the wrong place. They’re babies who don’t know what they’re doing, hence it’s important for you to teach them what you want them to do, but in a reward-based, friendly manner.

If your corgi puppy does something that you don’t like, it’s best to ignore that behaviour. Do not discipline your puppy as you might be doing more harm than good.

When you have behavioural concerns about your dog, it’s always best to discuss them with your vet or dog trainer first, before taking any action yourself.

Are corgi puppies easy to potty train?

Corgis are a smart dog breed and can be easier to potty train than many other dogs. However this always depends on the characteristics of your individual dog and your personal circumstances and training approach.

How to potty train a corgi puppy

If you started potty training your corgi puppy with pee pads, you can eventually transition your dog to outside grass.

This can be as simple as placing your dog in the grass during their potty time, and using the same pee command words (such as “go potty”) that you used when you trained your puppy to use the pee pads. Rinse and repeat for a few times until your dog gets the hang of it.
